Germany updates its list of high-risk areas as of 14 January 2022

The Ordinance on Coronavirus Entry Regulations establishes a standard, national responsibility to register, quarantine, and provide documentation, as well as a restriction on transport of variations of concern from regions of concern.

The Second Ordinance to Amend the Ordinance on Coronavirus Entry Regulations of 22 December 2021 ensures that the coronavirus-related regulations governing entry into Germany continue in effect, with certain modifications, until 3 March 2022. It also extends the necessity to quarantine on entrance until March 3, 2022.

The Ordinance on Coronavirus Entry Regulations includes a broad need for all people entering the nation to provide proof, regardless of mode of conveyance or previous time spent in a high-risk region or area of variants of concern. When entering the country, anyone aged 6 and older is required to have a negative test result or confirmation of vaccination or recovery.

Persons who have spent time in an area categorized as a high-risk area or an area of variations of concern during the past 10 days prior to arrival must also comply with particular duties to register, show proof, and self-isolate. Concerning admission into Germany from states of concern, a carriage prohibition – subject to a very restricted set of exemptions – applies to direct movement of passengers from such countries via train, bus, ship, or airline.

High-risk areas

The countries found in this regularly updated list are currently deemed high-risk areas.

Rules that must be followed

Persons who have spent the previous 10 days in one of the above-mentioned danger zones (high-risk or virus variant area) before entering the Federal Republic of Germany must follow the following rules:

  • Fill out the digital entrance registration form at this link and bring the confirmation with them when they enter.
  • Carry proof of a test, vaccination, or proof of recovery, and offer the proof to the carrier for the sake of transportation if they utilize a carrier. Only a PCR test is available if one has previously lived in a viral variant area.
  • Individuals who have been in a danger location must immediately return home – or to alternate accommodations at the destination – and isolate themselves for 10 days (domestic quarantine). The isolation period is 14 days if you have previously stayed in a virus variant area.
  • The quarantine at home can be waived sooner if proof of recovery, vaccination proof, or negative test results are presented via the upload site of the digital entrance registration.
