On Wednesday, the European Commission in Brussels released their Tourism and Transport Package, intended to clarify the gradual reopening of travel and tourism in the Schengen area. The package is aimed both travellers and businesses, pledging a safe restoration of the freedom of movement to and between European Union countries now that borders have begun to open again.
“We are helping European tourism get back on track while staying healthy and safe,” said Thierry Breton, the Commissioner for the Internal Market.
The Commission touts a comprehensive overall strategy for re-opening the tourism industry, transport services, and travel to Europe. Among the plans is a common approach to a gradual opening of border crossing and lifting restrictions at borders within the Schengen zone. EU open borders, according to the package, will be based on epidemiological and safety concerns, with close attention being paid to countries where the situation is showing improvement.
Tourists with a Schengen visa or a visa for Europe will therefore be allowed to travel to and within Europe in a controlled and gradual manner. The Commission also said that emphasis is being put on new health and safety protocols for hospitality establishments like hotels, bed and breakfasts, and hubs of travel.
Businesses can also expect support from the European Commission’s plan, as they have assured liquidity for the tourism industry in the form of €100 billion in financial relief from their SURE Programme. The Commission also reaffirmed its commitment to promoting local tourist destinations and connecting citizens to each other to foster economic growth.
